The value of sacrifice
There is only one reason a person acquires, makes, attaches to, or takes something up: because they believe it will have greater value or use in the future than it presently does. This is the reason that a tool is taken in hand, practice is begun, knowledge is acquired, property purchased, skill is trained, inventory stocked, friendship is made, marriage is performed, nations are born - even the reason why a human sense of identity is nutured. There are, however, many other reasons why a person holds onto that which is theirs - and many, many more reasons why a person gives up, shares, uses up or otherwise sacrifices what they had made their own. Just as one would not purchase something for more than it is worth, so should one properly sacrifice what has been taken up - that our sacrifice earns honor, instead of shame. Beginning things is so simple: it is in the ending of things that the measure of our conscience is made.
